Sliding and hard material coatings

Essential for quality

High-performance coatings
from Lutz Blades

The foundation must be right – that’s a given with our blades. That’s why every material we use is optimally matched to the task it needs to perform. And the same applies to the sliding and hard material coating. Here, too, there’s no one-size-fits-all approach. Our experts recommend exactly the coating that best suits your cutting application, your cutting environment, and your manufacturing process.

How you benefit

from our high-performance coatings
  • Higher cutting speed and output
  • Longer service life and fewer blade changes
  • Reduced friction between blade and material being cut
  • Higher cutting quality

Variants

of our coating program
  • TiN (Titanium Nitride)
  • TiC (Titanium Carbide)
  • TiCN (Titanium Carbon Nitride)
  • TiAlN (Titanium Aluminum Nitride)
  • DLC (Diamond-like Carbon)
  • (PTFE) (Poly-Tetra-Fluoro-Ethylene) – Teflon®

How does a
coating work?

Friction occurs between the blade and the material being cut. This friction leads to tiny (unavoidable) damages to the cutting edge. Over time, these micro-damages “accumulate” and result in the dulling of the cutting edge.

Solution A: Choosing a material whose properties slow down the formation of damage.

Solution B: Choosing a coating that forms a thin film between the cutting edge and the material being cut.

See for yourself the performance advantages of a coated blade compared to an uncoated one.

The different variants
of our coating program

The LUTZ BLADES coating program includes the following variants:

TiN (Titanium Nitride)

Standard hard material with high wear resistance and a relatively high coefficient of friction (approx. 0.4 to 0.7 against reference material steel), usually gold-colored, safe operating range up to approx. 300 °C.

TiC (Titanium Carbide)

Has lower wear resistance than TiN with a significantly lower coefficient of friction (approx. 0.3 to 0.5 against reference material steel), usually anthracite-colored.

TiCN (Titanium Carbon Nitride)

Intermediate coating material between the high wear resistance of TiN and the low coefficient of friction of TiC, relative position between TiN and TiC depending on the ratio of C and N, usually anthracite-colored.

TiAlN (Titanium Aluminum Nitride)

Has greater oxidation resistance than TiN with a comparable coefficient of friction, usually anthracite blue.

DLC (Diamond-like Carbon)

Has high wear resistance with a low coefficient of friction (approx. 0.1 against reference material steel); susceptible to impact loads and high temperatures (between 100 and 300 °C depending on the structure).

(PTFE) (Poly-Tetra-Fluoro-Ethylene) – Teflon®

Non-stick coating Teflon® (PTFE); due to the very low surface tension, practically no foreign bodies stick to the cutting edge, resistant to acids and alkalis; significantly reduced friction resistance; the very low static friction allows for smooth cutting (therefore very well suited for medical applications); low wear resistance; not suitable for contact with sodium and at temperatures above 250 °C.

Colored lacquer

Applied over the entire surface, serves as a sorting aid for different material thicknesses and as corrosion protection.

Bluing / Blackening

Applied over the entire surface, light corrosion and starch protection, also serves as a distinguishing aid.

Of course, blade coatings can be combined with full-surface coatings.
